Online Tests!

Hi
Welcome to the world of blogging! Hope you have fun blogging and probably start your own blogs for education or entertainment!

As the first week activity, read the following comment and respond. Give your views about online test based on the test you took on 27th August 2015. Describe the test in detail (what kind of questions) and its advantages and disadvantages. What kind of tests would you think would be good for undergraduate students?

I prefer the online examination to the offline one. In the online exam, I didn’t have to spend time on bubbling my answers like in offline. Also, enough rough papers are provided for rough work in the online exam, whereas you’ve to use the question paper space for rough work in the offline mode. Also, navigating through questions is much easier in online mode and I can also track how many questions are attempted, not attempted and marked for review. This is a big advantage as it saves me from the time wastage in flipping pages. I would definitely suggest my juniors to go for the online examination mode as it has numerous advantages over the offline mode as I’ve written above!

  1. Hi everyone,
Frankly speaking this is the first online test i have gone through. I think all our exams should be made online because it saves a lot of time as maa'm has already pointed out. There is no use in writing a one and half page essay on a particular topic since it doesn't show our proficiency in it. Actually our exams should be conducted to test how much we are aware of each particular paper. In online tests before submitting the answers we are shown a message as to how many are left unanswered and this gives us a chance to answer those which are left mistakenly without searching for each answer. Also online tests are much easier in that we don't have to care for our handwriting.
For the online test conducted on 27th of this month I had one comprehension passage which is a reading exercise, two listening exercise and a few grammar exercise. Among these three I liked the listening exercise more because among the two conversations one was by a native English speaker and I had to play it twice in order to understand the language and therefore I think I need to listen to more of this type to improve mine.
I also wanted to blog here that there should be a provision made available for a review of the test. Because after completing the test I didnt have the least notion that I would score only 19out of 30 and if we are able to have a detailed analysis of answers we would be able to identify our weak area.
Even though online tests are much easier to work with than our usual paper and pen method we can say we would gradually lose our ability to write fastly and neatly. But again a question arises whether is writing that necessary in this modern technical world?
Undergraduate students must also be trained to attend these types of online tests which will enhance their listening, speaking and reading skills. Only those who have a good knowledge of these can become a better user of the language.

    1. A very thorough description! i do agree about losing our writing style! Regarding the review of test, it is available in server system. if this had been a real time test, i would have discussed the mistakes. evn now we can review each and every paper.

  3. The online test which was held on 27th August in our department language lab was an easy one. The test was for 30 marks and the questions were based on reading comprehension, audio and visual clips and simple grammatical errors. I lost marks in grammar correction and I think it's because of my lack of practice in grammatical puzzle. I made mistakes in reading comprehension as well. Comparing to grammar exercises and reading comprehension, I found the questions based on audio/video clips were more interesting. The answers were easy to choose from the clips. There was no difficulty to access to the different accents and no errors occurred while playing the clips. More than knowledge the test was skill oriented. This type of test also increases the time management ability.

  4. Hi

The Online Test which I had on August 27 was a good one where the undergraduates or the other grade students can also be given a chance to have an experience over it. If they like the approach it can be followed up.

In my Test I was given Comprehension passage, Analytical/ cognitive ability, listening ability and the grammar exercises. The Comprehension Skill tests the candidates' ability to read, understand and respond to the question asked. The Analytical / cognitive ability tested the understanding and connecting ability of the student to find the answers in the picture and answer the questions which had good message about the traffic rules through the story of the hare and the tortoise. The listening aptitude had the audio of the native as well as the non - native speakers' clipping; which is actually a good combo to be given. Because most of us are very comfortable with non native speakers tone, accent and pronunciation. The audio had the good and perfect accent, intonation and pronunciation. But compared to non - native speaker's audio clipping, native speaker's clipping was not too comfortable as it did for non native clipping. So the exposure to native speakers accent would improve the level of better understanding with tone, accent, intonation and pronunciation. The grammar exercise was the fun loving part in the test. It was asked just to identify the wrong usage of tense in the sentence which is the base for the language as well as it improves the ability to use the language either to speak or to pen down.

Moreover the student gets the result as soon as he logs out of the page; which helps the student to know more about the area of improvement and measures taken immediately after the test. It is more time saving than the teacher evaluate and distributes the mark and area to be improved.

The exercise which had on Online Test was more practical rather than skim, scan and vomit in paper. It is more based on the proficiency level of the student than testing the memorizing capacity of the student. If this approach is been to action it would do wonders in the education system.

The negative side of this test is that, if the computer collapses due to the power shut down or any other misfortunate circumstance like not proper with audio and video clipping, the candidate wont be able to answer the question and would fail the system/ Online Testing. There is no space for working out having piece of paper beside can help to work out in the necessary areas (like jutting down the points....). Some Candidates could not manage with time and the page automatically closes before the completion of the test.

If a student was given this test without proper exposure and guidance, the candidate may approach the test with tension and may not perform well and will have a reverse at this approach of testing. Appropriate exposure with Time Management may provide the students more liking for this kind of testing. To note that most of the competitive exams are being done with Online Testing in order to test the candidates skill based knowledge.

To me Online Testing is the best and appropriate one. Having it for Undergraduate will really work and mean a lot. Hope they too will like the system.

  5. On August 27th an Online test was conducted in English language lab for half hour . The online test comprised of three types of questions like 1.Read the passage and answer the question, for which an audio recording was given as a passage. The audio recording was native English language speakers conversation and acute listening was required to understand that audio. After the audio stopped I answered the five sets of questions given ,which had multiple choice method of choosing answers. 2. The second type of question was reading comprehension and five sets of questions were given with multiple choice answers .3. The third test was error correction which checked my knowledge in grammar. These three methods of questioning in online test checked my level of listening, reading and writing . And after completing the online test the result was announced by professor instantly. There is also no error in validating the online test because the computer gives the accurate mark and there is no area for asking for or giving extra mark . The computer acts as a judge in validating the students knowledge about the subject accurately. By which the teachers can validate their teaching, whether the student has learnt something from their teaching or the student needs special attention. The online test acts as a good tool for teachers to avoid the mentality of malpractices in students like copying in the exam. The online test acts as an useful tool for teachers in equipping students..

  6. This is my first experience in attending Online test. Online test gave me a new experience and it was interesting. The online test consists of questions like reading comprehension, error correction and listening comprehension. These three formats scrutinized me on English language. The result was instantly told by our professor. And there was no time for me to recheck the answers because of fixed time,(i.e) for half hour. The online test is a great tool in attracting students in the concept of the fear of exam. The concept of online test is a new arena where surely the undergaduate students will enjoy exam. On one side the term "exam" is a stress but by introducing technology that stress level is reduced and the students get there marks as soon as they write their exams, which will surely reduce their stress level. The online test is surely a new and useful platform by which the students will generally have some atmosphere of air conditioned room and no more it is a traditional writing exam but just clicking exam(clicking the mouse).

    1. if a student is not familiar with technology, then will it reduce his / her stress level? like Hepsi mentioned, without exposure to online tests, it would become more stressful!

  7. On-line test is a non- removable examination pattern of todays's life.Using computers for testing is very quick assesment. It is a growing examination method because of its speed and accuracy . It needs less man power to execute the examination. It is very interactive and different from ordinary paper examination.Every one gets different question as the server is moduled with many sets of question paper.

It makes everyone less stressful because we dont have any tension about hall ticket and other statinary things. But like paper-pen test Time Management is mandatory. Here large number of students are assessed equally and redused oppurtunity for cheating.

I like online testing pattern if provided with the answers immediately to know our performance as it would definitely ensure us with the areas to be more concentrated. In regards with English it helps to assess mastry over the language skills.

English online test gives input through listening and reading exercises. The test which i took on communication skills on 27th August was comprises of listening, reading, visual comprehension and spotting Errors. This is my first online test. I loved it and exited to do that as i could know my level. The listening comprehension gave a real touch of native speaker. It is effective and efficient because students don't waste much time to answer the questions, because they only click the best answer that is provided. I advise the undergraduate students to take up online tests to upgrade their communication and to save time.

  8. Online tests are common nowadays. As part of job selection process I appeared for an on line test and I could not complete that by the given time. Personally the time countdown on the screen created so much stress. So training , experience and confidence is very important when we attend an online test.
The online test which we had on 27th of august was comparatively easy and tension free. I scored 19 out of 25, I found problem with the reading section, where all the option in the question sounded similar and it created a bit of confusion. Rest of the sessions were really easy and interesting especially the audio and visual test.
Unexpected techinical errors may affect the online tests like powercut, internet or computer related technical errors etc. One of the audio file was not working while I appeared the exam, so that I could not attempt all questions. But at the same time online tests are more accurate and learner friendly. The students will get the results with in minutes which is good for them to make corrections quickly. In that sense the online test was a good experience, and practice on these kind of test will help us a lot.

  10. I would like to articulate my comment on how I felt with the online test. I have had the experience of such online test when I was actually interested in testing myself with the grammar part. It worked well then. I did feel free to think for there was no faculty to pester around. This similar experience now as a part of my academy is indeed welcoming in the case of TIME MANAGEMENT. And as well the dreadful term “test” is like taking a walk on the grass. The listening and reading skill was given a tap I would say. I knew I went wrong with the question asking me the number ‘fourteen’ or ‘forty’ and on giving the right description of the picture displayed. I wish I would acquaint more with the native pronunciation and better myself but on the description of the displayed picture I disagree partly still because my perception and the expected perception might have found a variance. THUMPS- UP TO THE ONLINE TESTING METHOD!

  11. The pros and cons I felt on online test, are it is not the cliché concept of taking up a test with paper and pen rather the stereotypical notion about test has been evaded through online test. With variables of different sections the test has been designed like reading skill, listening skill, spotting grammatical errors unlike essay writing and brief answers which personally I use to take up and the term TEST is a fear factor to me. But this online test is a pester free zone according to me and should eye a hawk-watch with the TIMINGS. Initially while taking the test I thought I might have trouble with the native accented speech. But it went well. None were aware of my anxiety until I open up myself. And then coming to the pictures I felt the descriptions were culture-cornered. According to me this online testing is partially learner-friendly!
